Our Local Team
Pieter De Backer
After graduating with a university degree in Roman languages, Pieter decided it was time to leave his native Belgium and head out into the world. For 6 years, across five continents, he experienced countless adventures, big and small, through diverse environments ranging from New Mexican deserts to hiking through Dogon villages of Mali. After stints managing a hostel in the canyons of the Andes, and working as a facilitator in a Maya community of Guatemala, Pieter decided to fly east to travel and study in India.
In 2009, he lived in the sacred city of Varanasi where he studied Vedic philosophy and tabla. During this profound period, he was privately instructed in the practices of meditation, asana, pranayama, devotion, and Indian classical music.
In 2012, Pieter traveled to Slovenia where he fell in love the simple rhythms of farm life. He bought a small farm in (NAME OF) mountains. His life and perspective underwent profound shifts as he started growing his own fruits and vegetables, exploring and caring for the surrounding forest and meadows.
Eventually, he was joined by his partner, Lynn and together with their two children they manage Madre Terra, a center for yogic practice and self-sufficient living that has been visited by hundreds of visitors from around the world.
Pieter also loves to share his passion for competitive endurance sports, including triathlon and trail running.
